Healthcare Scholarship: American Assembly for Men in Nursing (AAMN)

Overview of the American Assembly for Men in Nursing Scholarship

The American Assembly for Men in Nursing (AAMN) awards four annual educational scholarship programs, to reward exceptional undergraduate and graduate students in nursing. In keeping with the aims of the AAMN, to support men in the nursing profession, all of the scholarships are open to male applicants, only. As the scholarship programs are funded through donations and grants, the number of scholarships awarded each year can vary. In 2014, eight undergraduate students and two graduate students received academic scholarships through the Assembly’s four programs.

The AAMN’s four scholarship programs are the Jadeh Marselis-Moore Student Nurse Essay Contest, the MurseWorld Student Nurse Essay Contest and the AAMN Foundation Student Nurse Essay Contest, all aimed at undergraduate students. In addition, the AAMN Foundation Student Nurse Essay Contest Graduate Scholarship is aimed at current students in graduate nursing programs.

The requirements for each scholarship program are largely the same. Each applicant must be a current member of the AAMN. He must be a male pre-licensed student, currently enrolled in a licensed nursing program that culminates in NCLEX-RN eligibility. In the case of the Graduate-level scholarship, the applicant must be currently enrolled in a relevant graduate program in nursing and must hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing from a licensed program. All applicants must submit a 500-word essay on the theme “Why I Chose Nursing as a Career.” The essay must be typewritten and double-spaced with 12-point type. Applicants must submit their essay in pdf-format, along with a cover sheet and a fully filled-out application form. Each application must also contain a letter of recommendation from a professor or relevant faculty member, which confirms the student’s good academic standing. All applications should be submitted via email to the AAMN. Each of the undergraduate scholarships is worth $500 and the graduate-level program is worth $1000.

The application window for each scholarship begins on April 1st and the submission deadline is July 1st. Winners are awarded their scholarships by Oct 20th. Note, however, that exact submission dates can vary slightly from one year to the next, so it’s well worth consulting with the AAMN website for current scheduling information.
