Healthcare Scholarship: Bill Kane Undergraduate Scholarship

Overview of the Bill Kane Undergraduate Scholarship

The Bill Kane Undergraduate Scholarship, granted annually by the SHAPE America: Society of Health and Physical Educators, recognizes the achievements of an outstanding undergraduate student majoring in health education. The cash award is for $1,000 and is awarded annually. Applications are due by November 15th and recipients are notified by December of the same year.

Any student enrolled in a health program at an accredited college or university is welcome to apply. Students must be enrolled in colleges in the United States or within U.S. territories. Applicants must be full-time students throughout both the fall and spring semesters of the year in which they apply for the award, with a course load of at least 12 hours. Applicants must be currently in their sophomore, junior or senior year of study.

The scholarship is only open to students with an overall grade point average of 3.25 or above (on a 4.0 scale). Previous recipients of the SHAPE America undergraduate award may not apply for the Bill Kane Undergraduate Scholarship.

The scholarship application must include an application form, available through the SHAPE America website; a student essay, a current, official transcript (including coursework from the fall semester), a current resume, and three letters of recommendation. A winning application will demonstrate the student’s leadership abilities or potential, academic strengths and an active role in health education-related activities or organizations. The application form includes several questions, including how you intend to use the scholarship money, if awarded. (There are no restrictions on how you use the cash prize.)

Applicants must compose a typed personal essay of 400-450 words, double-spaced. This student essay should focus on what the applicant wishes to accomplish as a health education specialist, as well as their present goals and aspirations as a “health educator in training.” A winning essay will highlight the attributes and merits of the field of Health Education.

The three letters of recommendation should be written and signed by relevant professors, and should address the student’s academic status, leadership potential and dedication to the field of health education.

All applications must be submitted by postal mail and include a cover sheet, career goals, list of extracurricular service activities, list of academic honors and awards, a typed personal essay, three letters of recommendation, and an official transcript.
