Healthcare Scholarship: Gallagher Health Careers Scholarship

Overview of the Gallagher Health Careers Scholarship

The Gallagher Health Careers Scholarship is intended to recognize exceptional students entering health-related careers. The awards are awarded to undergraduate students in their junior or senior year. Each year, five scholarships are awarded, for $5,000 each. These awards are granted in two cycles each year; half are given out in the fall and half in the spring semester.

The deadline for all applications is May 16th, as of 2014. Note that the due date is for receipt of the application, not the postmark deadline. Therefore, if mailing in your application, be sure to allow sufficient time for delivery. In addition, the deadline may change slightly from year to year. Therefore, consult the Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. website for full, up-to-date information on the scholarship before applying. You may also find all necessary application materials on the website.

In order to be eligible for the scholarship, you must be enrolled full-time at an accredited post-secondary institution. You must also be studying a health-related field. However, there is no set list of “acceptable majors.” Therefore, students who are studying non-traditional subjects, such as music therapy, are encouraged to apply. Likewise, students in more “traditional” majors, such as biology or pharmacy, are equally eligible.

As part of your application, you must submit evidence of a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, out of 4.0. You need to provide an official copy of your most recent transcript, to be ordered directly from your school’s registrar’s office. If you have recently transferred schools, you should provide transcripts from all of the institutions where you have studied. You must also submit an essay of about 500 words or two double-spaced pages. In the essay, you should describe yourself, your interests and your goals in a healthcare career. You should also elucidate how winning the scholarship can assist you to pursue your particular interests in healthcare. In addition to the essay, you should include two letters of recommendation in the application. At least one of the letters should be written by a relevant professor or a faculty advisor.

A winning application will also include documentation of the applicant’s interest in civic or community organizations and academic success. If you are already eligible to receive Financial Aid in the coming year, you should also outline the amount of aid you are expecting to receive. You should also provide contact information for your school’s financial aid office.
