Overview of the General Mills Graduate Scholarship

The world of food continues evolving to meet the challenges of feeding an enormous, and still growing, global population. In an effort to continue attracting the best and brightest minds to a vital sector of our national and global economy, General Mills and the Institute of Food Technology (a 75 year old institution working to “unlock the potential of food science”) teamed up to create a scholarship. A graduate level opportunity for students pursuing an advanced degree, the General Millls Graduate Scholarship will be awarded to two students to help defray their costs of education. Following the completion of their course of study, both students are also offered a 12 week internship with General Mills to put the theory learned in the classroom into practical experience in the field.

In order to qualify for the General Mills Graduate Scholarship and Internship, students wishing to apply must be a current MS (Master of Science) or PhD candidate currently enrolled in a food science program. Applicants must also have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in their given course of study. Students must also be a member in good standing with the Institute of Food Technology’s Student Association in order to have their application reviewed and considered. International students wishing to apply; need to already have, or be able to obtain their F-1 visa while maintaining the right to work in the United States. Finally, students awarded the scholarship must be able to commit to completing a paid internship with General Mills during the summer following the award of their scholarship.

Students interested in receiving the scholarship must apply and interview during the fall after applications open in August. Top candidates will be contacted for a phone interview during October after the initial application period. After reviewing applications and interviews, General Mills and the IFT will make their decisions, contacting recipients by November to inform them of the good news.

For the successful applicant, the General Mills Graduate Scholarship is worth $5,000. After utilizing the scholarship to help continue or complete their advanced degree, students are expected to take part in the internship portion of the scholarship. Twelve weeks of paid work with General Mills scheduled between June and August make up the second half of the scholarship. Internship options include working in Quality Control or Research and Development, allowing students to pare their classroom experiences with what actually goes on at a major corporation.
