Healthcare Scholarship: Institute of Food Technology Scholarships

Overview of the Institute of Food Technology (IFT) Scholarships

The Institute of Food Technology (IFT) Scholarships are awarded each year to undergraduate and graduate students in the food sciences. Each year, the IFT awards over $100,000 in total to 100 winning candidates. The scholarship program consists of six different awards: Freshman Scholarships (for current high school seniors), Undergraduate Scholarships (for sophomores, juniors and seniors), Graduate Scholarships (MS and Ph.D. students), the Evan Turek Memorial Scholarship and Internship Sponsored by Kraft Foods (for undergraduates), the Evan Turek Memorial Scholarship and Internship Sponsored by Mondelez International (for undergraduates), and the General Mills Graduate Scholarship (MS and PhD).

Depending on the particular scholarship you wish to pursue, the eligibility criteria vary slightly. The primary distinction between the prizes is the year of schooling in which you are currently enrolled. Each student may apply for only one scholarship. Therefore, in some cases, applicants may need to choose which scholarship is most applicable to their own situation and personal goals in the food service field.

Some general requirements are the same, regardless of which scholarship you apply for. You must demonstrate good academic standing by submitting evidence of a 3.0 grade point average (out of 4.0). You must also submit a transcript, reflecting your academic performance in the most recent semesters of study. You must attach a letter of recommendation from a relevant advisor or teacher. Finally, you must be enrolled in your course of study, whether you are currently completing your high school studies or you are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate-level program in food sciences. Finally, you have to be a student member of the IFT at the time of your application.

The deadline for the Freshman Scholarships and the Evan Turek Scholarships is April 1st, while the deadline for the Graduate Scholarships is February 20, and the deadline for the other scholarships is January 30th. However, deadlines can vary somewhat from year to year. Therefore, it is advisable for all hopeful candidates to review the annual guidelines on the IFT website before submitting their applications.

The undergraduate Scholarships include four individual prizes, worth between $1,000 and $3,000. The Graduate Scholarships consist of five individual prizes, which range between $1,000 and $5,000. The Freshman Scholarships are worth $1,000. The Evan Turek Scholarships include $1,000 as well as a paid summer internship, either with Kraft Foods or Mondelez International. The General Mills Scholarship is for $5,000 and a paid internship with General Mills.
