Healthcare Scholarship: The Leopold Schepp Foundation Scholarships

Overview of the Leopold Schepp Foundation Scholarships

The Leopold Schepp Foundation Scholarships are awarded to exceptional undergraduate and graduate students with financial need. In order to qualify for the award, applicants must demonstrate academic ability, high personal character and financial need. The size of the scholarship varies, depending on the student’s financial need, and may total up to $8,500.

The award is named after Leopold Schepp, a German-born immigrant who wished to support deserving scholars in their post-graduate study. Schepp started the foundation in 1925, to encourage academic excellence. In total, the foundation awards around 200 award each year to undergraduate and graduate students.

The application must include references from academic deans or advisors, employers or personal associates. Applicants must also provide academic transcripts, which should demonstrate a GPA of at least 3.2, on a 4.0 scale. In addition, applicants must conduct an interview in New York. Travel expenses to attend the interview cannot be reimbursed.

Finally, all applicants must demonstrate financial need by submitting their parents’ most recently filed income tax returns. Applicants should also submit a detailed overview of their academic expenses and resources. Eligible applicants are expected to apply for financial aid from other sources, including federal, state and university funding. The Leopold Schepp Foundation Scholarship does not cover debts that have been incurred already for previous study.

In order to qualify for the scholarship, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. You must also be 30 years old or younger, to qualify for the undergraduate study awards. Applicants for graduate study scholarships may be up to 40 years old. High school seniors need not apply. While scholarships are good for only one year, scholarship winners may re-apply for a second year of coverage. Renewal applications are sent to past recipients in November. They must demonstrate their academic ability and continuing financial need.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with the window closing once a sufficient number of applications have been received for that year’s selection process. Typically, the window for submitting applications opens in mid-August. Winning applicants are notified in early May, to receive funding for the following academic year.
