Healthcare Scholarship: California Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (CRAEF) Scholarship

Overview of the California Restaurant Association Educational Foundation Scholarship

The California Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (CRAEF) awards its CRAEF scholarship to outstanding undergraduate students and high school students with interest in the restaurant and hospitality industry. The scholarship, worth between $2,000 and $2,500, is awarded over the course of two semesters.

The CRAEF scholarship is only open to California residents, though California residents attending out-of-state schools may also apply. In addition, applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. You must be enrolled full-time, or for at least nine credit hours, at an accredited institution. Students must be enrolled for two consecutive semesters following the award of the scholarship. In the previous semester, students must have either completed a term postsecondary program or completing their studies as a high school senior. All applicants must also have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.50 on a 4.0 scale.

In addition to scholarly excellence, applicants for the scholarship must work in the restaurant and hospitality industry. High school students entering their freshman year of college must have worked at least 250 hours, college freshmen entering sophomore year must have worked at least 400 hours, and students beyond the sophomore year must have worked at least 550 hours. All work experience must be documented with paycheck stubs or a signed letter from the employer, and not with a W-2.

All applications must also include a typed, double-spaced personal essay, a copy of the student’s program curriculum, a transcript, and two letters of recommendation. The student’s program curriculum should show the number of credit hours and all the degree requirements of the student’s chosen course of study. The curriculum may be printed from the college catalog or from the college’s official website. The transcript must be current, either from the most recent high school or college semester. The letters of recommendation must come from current or previous employers in the restaurant or hospitality industry. The personal essay must demonstrate the student’s interest and commitment to the restaurant and hospitality, beyond the information already provided through the documented work experience and academic record.

Applications must be submitted in full by mail and postmarked by May 16th. Finalists will be notified and contacted within six to eight weeks for an in-person interview with the CRAEF scholarship panel. Winners will receive their scholarship funding upon submitting evidence of their enrollment for the coming two semesters.
