Healthcare Scholarship: Maryland Graduate and Professional School Scholarship

Overview of the Maryland Graduate and Professional School Scholarship

The Maryland Graduate and Professional School Scholarship is open to Maryland residents who demonstrate financial aid and excellent academic work in the fields of dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, social work or veterinary medicine. The scholarship program is designed to assist degree-seeking graduate and professional students in these various fields, provided they are both Maryland residents and they are planning to attend one of several specified Maryland Schools. Specifically, the award is open to students pursuing graduate degrees at: University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Law, Pharmacy, or Social Work; University of Baltimore School of Law; The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine or The Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. In addition, students attending certain Maryland institutions offering a master’s degree in nursing or social work or a first professional degree in pharmacy may also be eligible.

Given that the scholarship is awarded to students attending several Maryland institutions, the specific timetable for applications varies depending on the individual school. Applicants are advised to consult with their school’s office of financial aid for school-specific and up-to-date deadline information. The minimum award amount is $1,000 per year and the maximum is $5,000 per year. The number of scholarships awarded and the cash value of each scholarship can vary from year to year.

To apply for the scholarship, you simply need to submit a completed FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form at fafsa.gov. In addition, ask the financial aid office of your school to consider you for the Graduate and Professional Scholarship.

Scholarship recipients may apply to renew their award throughout the duration of their graduate studies. If the application for renewal is accepted, you may continue to renew for up to eight semesters, provided you remain enrolled in an eligible program for the full duration. You must also demonstrate good academic performance as well as continuing financial need. Your individual school will determine your eligibility for the scholarship to be renewed.

While the scholarship is only available to students who demonstrate solid academic performance, the award is primarily need-based. In other words, priority is given to students who can demonstrate the greatest need for the funding, not for the students with the most exemplary academic records.
